Free Workshop for Medical Assistants

Improving Adherence through Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, patient-centered form of communication that seeks to elicit and strengthen patients’ motivation for change.  It is a collaborative conversation about change that is free of blame or judgment.  In this workshop we will examine how this form of communication differs from the traditional healthcare communication techniques of direct questioning, persuasion, and advice giving which have been found to be of limited effectiveness in the management of chronic illnesses like diabetes.  We will review some of the key skills and concepts that allow MI to be a form of commutation that is empathetic, supportive, positive, and reflective.

As a result, participants will learn that the intent of MI is to help pts recognize the difference between where they are and where they would like to be and we will review how MI accepts the patient’s level of motivation- whatever it is- as the starting point for change.  In this course we will begin to learn some of the skills needed to effectively utilize MI both at work and at home.

This workshop will provide 1 CEU to Medical Assistants through AAMA, AMT, and NCCT, as well as a light dinner and door prize.
