HEDIS SPOTLIGHT: Breast Cancer Screening 2018

7/18/2018

Who is included:

Percentage of women between the ages of 52-74 years of age that have had one or more mammograms any time on or between October 1 2016 and December 31 2018.

Who is excluded:

Bilateral Mastectomy any time during the member’s history through December 31 of the measurement year.  You can bill ICD-10CM Z90.13 (Bilateral Mastectomy) to help ensure that patients are excluded from this measure which will help you and the health plan utilize resources to reach out to members that do fall into the measure.

Importance of Screening:

The American Cancer Society's estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are:

  • About 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
  • About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
  • About 40,920 women will die from breast cancer.

Tips for Improvement:

  • Document and apply appropriate codes for women with a history of a mastectomy
  • Educate and encourage all women within the age group on the importance of preventative screening and early detection
  • Create a system to initiate reminders for women who are due to have their routine screening
  • Identify any barriers that may be preventing your patient from getting their preventative screening completed
